Next is a visit to Tegalalang, renowned for its stunning terraced rice fields that are a testament to the traditional Balinese agricultural practices and here you’ll enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.
Continue to Gunung Kawi Sebatu, an ancient Hindu temple and sacred spring that is located 10km north of Ubud, surrounded by lush vegetation. Day 6: Komodo Island Day Trip!
Today’s journey starts with an early pickup from your hotel in Labuan Bajo and transfer to the harbour to cruise to Komodo Island, one of the best places to spot Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat. It is estimated that there are around 2,000 dragons on the island, as well as a wide variety of other wildlife such as wild boar, deer and buffalo. The island is also excellent for bird watching with cockatoos and gosong birds, among others.
Don’t be mistaken – the Komodo may look large and cumbersome, but they can run at speeds of up to 18 kilometres per hour. They are also good swimmers, and, when short of food, these prehistoric looking animals might even be to eating their young! Filled with deadly toxic saliva and venom, these fascinating creatures are not the kind of animal that you want to get too friendly with! The terrain on Komodo Island is mostly flat and the flora changes with the seasons, going from dry and dusty with thin vegetation, to lush and green with the scent of wild basil in the air during the wet season.
Head ashore to the most beautiful Pink Beach, which gets its name and color from crushed red coral blended with sugar-soft white sand. This pristine beach is perfect for a swim or snorkel in the many shades of turquoise waters, with the underwater scenery as beautiful and full of life as the one above it. Sit back, relax and admire the passing scenery as you proceed heading for Rinca Island. Disembark at Loh Buaya pier and walk on elevated wooden paths to the Komodo Information Centre, where you may spot more dragons hiding beneath your way. The dragons on Rinca are slightly smaller than those on Komodo, but just as formidable.
Hop on the back of your speedboat and return to Labuan Bajo and to your accommodation for the rest of the day at leisure.
Overnight: Ta’aktana – Labuan Bajo | Meals: B, L
